Milky Mist Eyes India’s Largest Dairy IPO with ₹1,553 Crore Issue

Milky Mist Dairy Food Ltd is set to enter the public markets in the first week of August with a proposed ₹1,553 crore initial public offering (IPO), a move that could make it the largest IPO ever undertaken by an Indian dairy company.

The company will join a select group of listed dairy firms, including Parag Milk Foods, Hatsun Agro Product Ltd, and Dodla Dairy Ltd, marking another milestone in India’s rapidly evolving value-added dairy sector.

The public issue follows a successful pre-IPO funding round in May 2026, during which Milky Mist raised ₹482 crore from Jongsong Investments Pte. Ltd., an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings. The investment, made at ₹139.76 per share, valued the Erode-based dairy company at approximately ₹9,300 crore.

According to people familiar with the development, the proposed ₹1,553 crore offering will comprise a combination of fresh issue shares and an Offer for Sale (OFS) by promoters. The company had earlier filed draft papers indicating plans to raise ₹2,035 crore through its maiden public offering.

Milky Mist intends to deploy the fresh capital towards reducing debt, expanding and modernizing its manufacturing facility at Perundurai, Tamil Nadu, and establishing new facilities for whey protein concentrate, yoghurt, and cream cheese. The company also plans to strengthen its cold-chain infrastructure by deploying visi coolers, ice cream freezers, and chocolate coolers across its distribution network.

Founded in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Milky Mist has built its business around value-added dairy products, with a portfolio that includes paneer, cheese, curd, yoghurt, butter, ghee, ice cream, and dairy-based beverages. Notably, the company has consciously stayed away from the highly competitive liquid milk segment.

Behind the company’s rise is the story of its founder, T. Sathish Kumar, whose entrepreneurial journey began with a simple experiment in a small town in Tamil Nadu.

In the early 1990s, Kumar taught himself how to make paneer through trial and error. He boiled milk, added vinegar, and repeated the process until he perfected the product. In 1993, carrying just 10 kilograms of paneer in a bag, he traveled to Bengaluru in search of customers.

By 1995, he made a defining business decision: he stopped selling milk entirely and focused exclusively on paneer.

That single decision would eventually transform Milky Mist into one of India’s leading value-added dairy brands.

Today, the company:

  • Generates annual revenue of approximately ₹2,349.5 crore.
  • Commands an estimated 17% share of India’s paneer market.
  • Procures milk from more than 67,000 farmers across South India.
  • Is preparing for one of the country’s largest dairy-sector public offerings.

Industry analysts say Milky Mist’s success underscores a broader trend in India’s dairy sector, where value-added products are increasingly driving growth and profitability. While liquid milk remains a volume business with thin margins, categories such as paneer, cheese, yoghurt, and whey proteins are witnessing robust consumer demand and premium pricing.

“Milk is a commodity, but brands create differentiation,” said a dairy industry observer. “Milky Mist’s journey demonstrates how value addition, supply chain investments, and consumer trust can transform a regional business into a national brand.”

As investors await the company’s market debut, Milky Mist’s trajectory offers a compelling lesson in entrepreneurship: a decision made three decades ago to focus on paneer is now positioning the company at the forefront of India’s dairy industry’s next chapter.

From carrying 10 kilograms of paneer in a bag in 1993 to preparing for a multi-crore public offering in 2026, Milky Mist’s story reflects the growing opportunities in India’s value-added dairy ecosystem—and the enduring power of a well-timed business bet.
