Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister J. Chinchurani has called for a concerted effort to make Kerala self-sufficient in milk production.
She was inaugurating a two-day district dairy farmers’ meet and the Ksheera Theeram project at Punnapra in Alappuzha on Monday.
Ms. Chinchurani said the Ksheera Theeram project would act as a new source of income for fisher families in the district. “Under the project, financial assistance of ₹94,500 will be provided to a fisher family to purchase two cows,” the Minister said.
She said the State government had launched an insurance scheme to ensure coverage for the cattle of dairy farmers.
The meet is being organised under the aegis of the Punnapra Milk Producers Cooperative Society. A dairy development seminar, workshops, exhibition, dairy quiz competition and cultural programmes are being organised as part of the meet. The valedictory function will be inaugurated by Agriculture Minister P. Prasad on Tuesday at 12 p.m.
H. Salam, MLA presided over the inaugural function.
