MP adopts AI tech to ensure female calf births

Govt targets 50 lakh litres of daily milk production; cattle rearers to get subsidy up to ₹14 lakh.

Madhya Pradesh has become the second state in India, after Uttarakhand, to adopt Artificial Insemination (AI) with sex-sorted semen technology for cattle breeding. The initiative is designed to ensure the birth of female calves (Bachhiya), thereby improving cattle breeds, reducing the number of stray animals, and significantly enhancing milk production in the state.

Alongside this, the government has launched the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana, under which farmers will receive subsidies ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 14 lakh for establishing dairy units. The scheme aims to support large-scale dairy farming and make Madhya Pradesh a self-reliant hub of milk production.

AI technology: Only female calves to be born

According to Dr. Deepali Deshpande, Manager at the Central Semen Station (CSS), Bhopal, the technology relies on the scientific process of sex-sorting semen. Normally, male semen contains an equal proportion of X and Y chromosomes—X leads to the birth of a female calf, while Y results in a male calf.

In this technique, Y chromosomes are filtered out by machines, leaving only X chromosomes. The resulting semen, called sex-sorted semen, is used for insemination. This increases the probability of a cow giving birth to a female calf by up to 90 percent.

Dr. Deshpande explained that a pilot project was launched three years ago, and the outcomes have been highly encouraging. “In these years, 95 percent of inseminated cows delivered female calves. As this technology expands, farmers will no longer have to depend on other states for good-breed cows or buffaloes. High-yield dairy animals will be available locally,” she said.

Currently, the Bhopal-based semen station produces around 2 lakh doses annually, but the government has set a target of producing 25 lakh doses within five years.

However, the technology is expensive. The production cost of one dose is around Rs 850, but the government subsidizes it heavily, making it available to farmers at just Rs 100.

Benefits for farmers: More milk, fewer stray animals

The government hopes the scheme will yield multiple benefits. Female calves mean more milk-yielding cows, which in turn leads to increased milk production. Moreover, with fewer male calves born, the problem of stray cattle roaming in villages and cities will reduce, as farmers are less likely to abandon productive female animals.

Dr. Deshpande noted, “This is a dual solution—it raises dairy productivity and addresses the challenge of non-productive stray animals, which have become a burden for farmers and local administrations.”

Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana: Subsidy up to ₹14 lakh

To support dairy farmers, the state has rolled out the Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana, aimed at creating large, professional dairy units.

  • Each dairy unit will consist of 25 milch animals, either cows or buffaloes, or a mix of both.
  • The total cost of setting up one unit is estimated at Rs 42 lakh.
  • Farmers from the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) will get a 33% subsidy (Rs 14 lakh).
  • General and OBC categories will be entitled to a 25% subsidy (₹10 lakh).
  • Eligible farmers must undergo mandatory training in dairy farming before starting operations.

A farmer can establish up to eight units (200 animals). The loan is provided in four phases, and the subsidy is released in a lump sum after a three-year lock-in period. Beneficiaries are required to run their dairy for at least seven consecutive years. Failure to do so may lead to the recovery of subsidy amounts.

Animal Husbandry Minister Lakhan Patel explained that the scheme is designed for farmers who want to open large-scale dairy farms. “The aim is to make them financially self-reliant while also contributing to the state’s milk production goals,” he said.

Government’s milk production target: From 10 lakh to 50 lakh liters

At present, Madhya Pradesh collects around 10 lakh liters of milk daily through cooperative societies. The government initially aimed to double this figure to 20 lakh liters per day, but during a visit to Bhopal, Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah suggested raising the target to 50 lakh liters daily.

To meet this ambitious goal, the government is encouraging farmers to adopt advanced breeding technologies and expand dairy units. The Ambedkar Kamdhenu Yojana is central to achieving this target.

Overwhelming response from farmers

The scheme has generated a strong response across the state. According to Minister Patel, the government had planned to accommodate 850–900 beneficiaries based on budget provisions. However, within just a month of the portal’s launch, over 1,400 applications were received.

“Some farmers have even applied for the maximum quota of 200 animals (8 units). So far, 600–700 applicants have completed training, and around 350–400 cases have been forwarded to banks. In nearly 20 cases, loans have already been sanctioned. These farmers may soon start bringing in cattle,” Patel revealed.

The scheme also provides flexibility. A farmer with multiple units can choose different combinations of animals—for instance, one unit of buffaloes, one of crossbred cows, and one of indigenous cows. Once the first loan is repaid, farmers are eligible to apply again after a gap of two years.

A step toward a dairy revolution in MP

With the introduction of AI-based cattle breeding and financial support through the Kamdhenu Yojana, Madhya Pradesh is taking a big step toward transforming its dairy sector.

The dual strategy—ensuring more female calves through AI and financially supporting large dairy units—is expected to not only boost milk output but also generate employment, reduce dependence on other states for livestock, and address the long-standing issue of stray cattle.

If successful, the program could turn Madhya Pradesh into one of India’s leading milk-producing states, aligning with the national goal of self-reliance in dairy production.
