Mumbai, June 18: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said that Mumbai Metro can become a powerful platform for connecting rural dairy and agricultural producers with urban consumers, creating new marketing opportunities for farmers while strengthening the state’s rural economy.

Speaking at the inauguration of a dairy products outlet operated by the Warana Cooperative Milk Producers Union at the CSMT Metro Station on Tuesday, Fadnavis highlighted the potential of metro stations to serve not only as transport hubs but also as centres of economic activity.
“Mumbai Metro Line 3 has emerged as the city’s new lifeline and is the longest single underground metro corridor in Asia. Beyond transportation, metro stations can provide valuable commercial spaces that help rural products reach a larger consumer base,” he said.
The event was attended by Dairy Development Minister Atul Save, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, MLA Vinay Kore, and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director Ashwini Bhide.

The newly launched outlet will offer dairy products manufactured by farmer-owned cooperatives from Kolhapur and other parts of Maharashtra directly to consumers in Mumbai. According to Fadnavis, the initiative will improve market access for dairy farmers, ensure better value realization for their products, and provide urban consumers with convenient access to quality dairy products.
He noted that such commercial ventures at metro stations can contribute significantly to employment generation, business expansion, and rural economic development.
Describing the Warana outlet as more than a commercial establishment, Fadnavis said it reflects the entrepreneurial spirit and self-reliance of farmers from Kolhapur district. He also praised the Warana Group for its long-standing contribution to rural development, farmer welfare, and women’s empowerment.
Speaking on the occasion, Vinay Kore stated that the Warana Group procures milk daily from nearly 1.5 lakh dairy farmers and ensures regular and timely payments to producers. He emphasized that the establishment of sales outlets in Mumbai Metro stations would provide direct access to one of India’s largest consumer markets, benefiting rural dairy producers and cooperative institutions alike.
Industry observers believe that integrating dairy retail outlets within high-footfall urban transit systems could become a model for enhancing farmer-to-consumer linkages, reducing marketing intermediaries, and promoting cooperative dairy brands in metropolitan markets.
The initiative is expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s dairy value chain while creating a sustainable bridge between rural producers and urban consumers.
