On World Milk Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a major hike in milk procurement prices and support schemes for dairy farmers. The milk producers will receive Rs 3 more per litre of milk. The decision is expected to benefit over 2.5 lakh dairy farmers across the State.
On the occasion of World Milk Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a significant hike in milk procurement prices for dairy farmers associated with OMFED (Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation), on Sunday.
From today onwards, the milk producers will receive Rs 3 more per litre of milk, and the additional cost will be borne entirely by the State government.
The Chief Minister made the announcement at a special function held at Lok Seva Bhawan, stating that this move will directly benefit around 2.5 lakh dairy farmers across the State. In the same event, CM Majhi introduced a compassionate assistance scheme—in case of a dairy farmer’s untimely death, their family will receive an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh.

Highlighting the State’s vision, Majhi said that Odisha aims to become a model state in milk production. To double the State’s milk output within the next five years, the government has launched Mukhyamantri Kamadhenu Yojana, under which dairy farmers will receive up to 70 percent subsidy to set up new cattle sheds (Goshalas).
In a parallel move, the government reaffirmed its commitment to provide 30 lakh metric tons of OMFED ghee to Jagannath Temple in Puri for use in rituals of the deities.
OMFED milk price to increase for consumers
Besides, the price of OMFED milk will increase by Rs 2 per litre for consumers. Originally proposed as Rs 4 hike, the government will subsidize Rs 2, with the remaining Rs 2 to be paid by consumers, official sources said.
Deputy CM Pravati Parida, along with the Ministers from the Fisheries & Animal Resources Development and Law departments, attended the programme.
“Around 26,40,000 metric tonnes of milk was produced in Odisha in the FY 2023-24. After the new government came to power, we are focusing more on this Department to increase milk production and to make the farmers self-reliant. We have targeted to double milk production in the State in next five years,” the CM expressed.
