Punjab Farmer Breaks Wheat–Paddy Cycle, Builds Profitable Dairy-Led Enterprise

Gurdaspur: In a region long dominated by the wheat–paddy cycle, a small farmer from Punjab has emerged as a model of diversification and resilience by building a successful integrated farming system.

Punjab Farmer Breaks Wheat–Paddy Cycle, Builds Profitable Dairy-Led Enterprise

Gurnam Singh from Abalkhair village in Gurdaspur has transformed his 2-acre holding into a multi-enterprise farm combining dairy, poultry, and goat rearing—ensuring steady income and sustainability.

From Monoculture to Diversification

With shrinking landholdings and rising input costs making traditional farming less viable, institutions like Punjab Agricultural University and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) have been promoting diversification.

Inspired by training at KVK Gurdaspur in 2016, Singh ventured into dairy farming in 2017–18—laying the foundation of his success.

Dairy as the Backbone

Today, Singh manages 26 animals, including Murrah buffaloes, heifers, and calves. His farm produces 1.2–1.3 quintals of milk daily, sold directly to local households at ₹50–55 per litre.

He has adopted:

  • Open housing systems with fans, coolers, and water facilities
  • Homemade cattle feed to reduce costs
  • Selective breeding to improve productivity

“Success never comes easy. You must work hard and keep moving forward,” Singh says.

Integrated Farming for Multiple Income Streams

Singh’s farm goes beyond dairy:

  • Poultry:
    • 150 indigenous chickens
    • Meat fetches premium prices
    • Eggs sell at ₹8–15 depending on season
  • Goat Rearing:
    • 12 Beetal goat added recently
    • Known for high milk yield and market demand

This integration ensures diversified income and reduced risk.

Recognition and Expert Support

Singh’s innovative approach earned him the “Progressive Farmer Award” (2023) at a Kisan Mela organised by Punjab Agricultural University.

Experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra highlight his model as an example of sustainable farming.

“Diversification is no longer optional—it is essential for small farmers,” said agricultural expert Ankush Proch.

A Model for Small Farmers

Singh’s journey underscores a powerful message: even small landholdings can generate significant income when supported by scientific practices, diversification, and perseverance.

“A small piece of land can still give big dreams,” Singh says. “If we diversify wisely, farming becomes a system that supports the entire family.”
