Rural Women Drive ₹5,000-Crore Dairy Economy in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: In a remarkable display of grassroots entrepreneurship and economic resilience, rural women across 31 districts of Uttar Pradesh have built a thriving dairy network generating an estimated ₹5,000 crore annually.

Rural Women Drive ₹5,000-Crore Dairy Economy in Uttar Pradesh

Driven by women-led self-help groups (SHGs), this large-scale initiative spans over 6,000 villages and involves nearly 10 lakh litres of milk collection every day. These women are not just contributing to milk production—they are actively managing the entire dairy value chain, including procurement, processing, and marketing.

Officials credit the success to effective implementation of schemes under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM), which has provided training, financial support, and institutional backing. The initiative has significantly boosted household incomes while strengthening the rural economy.

“This model is transforming women into entrepreneurs, reducing rural migration, and accelerating local economic activity,” said a state government spokesperson. “With continued support, this network has the potential to elevate Uttar Pradesh’s dairy sector to new heights.”

Several women-led Milk Producer Companies (MPCLs) are at the forefront of this transformation:

  • Balini MPCL operates across Bundelkhand districts including Banda, Jhansi, and Lalitpur.
  • Kashi MPCL is active in the Purvanchal region, covering Varanasi, Ghazipur, and Mirzapur.
  • Samarthya MPCL supports women in districts such as Ayodhya, Amethi, and Raebareli.
  • Shri Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPCL works in the Gorakhpur division, including Deoria and Kushinagar.
  • Srijan MPCL is driving dairy development in the Terai region, including Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur.

Beyond economic gains, the initiative is fostering self-reliance, leadership, and social empowerment among rural women, positioning them as key drivers of India’s dairy growth story.
