Patna| Sudha, the dairy brand marketed by Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation Ltd (COMFED), has strengthened its presence in Northeast India with the inauguration of a 20,000-litre-per-day milk processing plant at Kanyaka Dairy in Jamugurihat, Shantipur, in Assam’s Sonitpur district.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility on Thursday in the presence of COMFED Chairman-cum-Managing Director Shirshat Kapil Ashok. The plant is expected to improve the availability of Sudha milk and dairy products in Tezpur and surrounding areas while strengthening the brand’s regional distribution network.
Sudha expands its dairy distribution network
COMFED began marketing Sudha packaged milk and dairy products in Assam in November 2018 through a third-party dairy processing facility at Amingaon near Guwahati. Its operations have since expanded across Assam and into neighbouring Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Guwahati unit currently distributes Sudha products through approximately 2,200 retail vendors. Its portfolio includes packaged milk, curd, paneer, curd-based beverages, peda and milk cake.
According to the information provided by COMFED, the unit sells an average of around 50,500 litres of milk daily. During the financial year 2025–26, it recorded business worth ₹121 crore and reported a profit of ₹8 crore.
The newly inaugurated plant adds local processing capacity, which could help the cooperative meet demand and improve product distribution in the Tezpur region.
COMFED plans a 1-lakh-litre dairy plant
Beyond the new facility, COMFED is pursuing plans to establish its own dairy processing unit in Assam with a proposed capacity of 1 lakh litres per day.
The federation has requested suitable land from the Assam government. The Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) has reportedly identified potential sites and presented them to COMFED officials for inspection and consideration.

If the larger project moves forward, it could provide additional processing capacity to support the federation’s expanding market in the Northeast. The project remains at the site-identification and consideration stage, based on the information provided.
Milk procurement and Bihar’s dairy growth
COMFED reportedly procures around 25 lakh litres of milk daily from farmers, while the government’s stated target is to increase procurement to 50 lakh litres per day. According to the federation’s public relations officer, Sudha currently supplies approximately 16–18 lakh litres of milk to markets each day, in addition to other dairy products.
Sudha products are also marketed in Delhi-NCR and Kolkata, extending the cooperative’s reach beyond Bihar and the Northeast.
Data cited from the Press Information Bureau (PIB) show that Bihar’s milk production increased from 7.77 million tonnes in 2014–15 to 12.85 million tonnes in 2023–24. The growth reflects the expansion of the state’s dairy sector amid government and cooperative initiatives.
Opportunities for farmers and value-added dairy
The expansion of Sudha’s processing and distribution network in Assam could create opportunities to strengthen links between the cooperative dairy sector and regional consumers. Any broader impact on local farmers will depend on how procurement arrangements, milk collection infrastructure and farmer participation develop alongside processing capacity.
The new plant marks another step in COMFED’s efforts to expand Sudha beyond its home market in Bihar. Its proposed larger Assam facility, if approved and implemented, would further increase the federation’s ability to serve consumers across Northeast India.
