A new study by Tetra Pak has revealed that upgrading existing dairy processing equipment could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 49%, offering a major pathway toward sustainability in the global dairy industry.

The findings, published in the company’s Dairy Processing Assessment, were independently reviewed by Carbon Trust, ensuring scientific credibility and industry-standard methodology.
Major Efficiency Gains Identified
The study compared older (2019 benchmark) dairy processing lines with upgraded systems using currently available technologies. The results show significant improvements:
- Up to 47% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
- 45% reduction in water usage
- 57% reduction in product losses
These gains come from optimizing electricity, heat, and cooling demand, along with recovery and reuse systems already available in the market.

If such upgrades are adopted across the dairy sector globally, the impact could be massive:
- Carbon savings equivalent to removing 3 million cars from the road
- Water savings of up to 455 million cubic metres annually
That’s not just efficiency—it’s a structural shift toward low-carbon dairy processing.
How the Emission Cuts Are Achieved
The reductions are driven by:
- Energy-efficient equipment upgrades
- Heat recovery and reuse systems
- Advanced cleaning-in-place (CIP) technologies
- Water recycling and filtration systems
The study used an “avoided emissions” model, measuring how much carbon is saved by reducing resource consumption while also accounting for emissions from the new technologies themselves.
