The Backbone of India’s White Revolution: Who Actually Owns Mother Dairy?

If you’ve ever enjoyed a glass of milk from a Delhi vending machine or a scoop of Mother Dairy ice cream, you’ve participated in a legacy that transformed India. While many iconic brands are owned by billionaire families or massive private conglomerates, Mother Dairy follows a much different path.

The Backbone of India’s White Revolution: Who Actually Owns Mother Dairy

Who Owns It?

Mother Dairy is not a private company. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

Because the NDDB is a statutory body under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying of the Government of India, Mother Dairy is essentially a government-owned entity. It belongs to the people of India, overseen by the state.

A Mission Born from Scarcity

To understand why Mother Dairy exists, you have to look back at the 1960s, when India faced severe milk shortages. The solution was Operation Flood, launched on January 13, 1970. This initiative—the largest dairy development program in the world—was designed to make India self-sufficient in milk production.

  • The Architect: Dr. Verghese Kurien, the “Father of the White Revolution,” was the visionary behind the movement.
  • The Launch: Mother Dairy was commissioned in 1974 to provide a direct link between farmers and urban consumers.
  • Innovation: In its early days, the brand introduced the concept of “milk booths,” where customers could buy fresh milk by inserting coins—a futuristic concept for 1970s India.

More Than Just Milk

While “Dairy” is in the name, the company has expanded far beyond the milk bottle. Today, it manages a diverse portfolio of household staples that many Indians use daily without realizing they come from the same parent organization:

SafalFresh Fruits, Vegetables, and Frozen Foods
DharaEdible Oils (Mustard, Sunflower, Soyabean)

A Unique Success Story

Mother Dairy stands as a rare example of a government-run enterprise that has successfully competed with private giants while maintaining deep consumer trust.

Unlike corporations driven solely by shareholder dividends, Mother Dairy’s primary goal remains rooted in its founding mission: supporting the Indian farmer and ensuring affordable nutrition for the Indian citizen. It wasn’t built to make a single family wealthy; it was built to solve a national crisis, a mission that continues over 50 years later.
