Uttar Pradesh Dairy Model Helps 18,000 Rural Women Become ‘Lakhpati Didis’

The dairy sector in Uttar Pradesh is undergoing a massive transformation, shifting from a fragmented, middleman-heavy business to a tech-driven, organized industry. Under the current administration, the “Lakhpati Didi” initiative has empowered over 18,000 women in the Awadh region to cross the ₹1 lakh annual income mark through dairy farming.

Uttar Pradesh Dairy Model Helps 18,000 Rural Women Become ‘Lakhpati Didis’

The Scale of the “White Revolution” in UP

The initiative has successfully integrated women into the formal economy, moving beyond traditional household animal care into professional entrepreneurship.

  • Daily Collection: The network now collects over 4 lakh litres of milk daily.
  • Massive Enrollment: Within just three years, 1.25 lakh women have joined the organized dairy system.
  • Economic Impact: Thousands of families have moved toward self-reliance, with milk becoming a primary source of steady income.

How Technology is Empowering the Village

The traditional struggle of rural dairy—low transparency and delayed payments—has been replaced by a modern digital infrastructure:

  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): Payments are transferred directly into women’s bank accounts every 10 days, eliminating the “middleman cut.”
  • Real-time Monitoring: Women use mobile apps and digital platforms to track milk quality (fat content), collection volume, and sales in real-time.
  • Transparency: Digital testing ensures that farmers get a fair price based on the actual quality of the milk, fostering trust in the system.

Training and Institutional Support

The government isn’t just providing a marketplace; it’s building a skilled workforce through the Saamarthya Milk Producer Company, a women-led organization.

  • Skill Development: Over 1.25 lakh women have undergone formal training in modern dairy production, quality management, and digital literacy.
  • Institutional Strength: By forming self-help groups (SHGs) and dairy committees, women have gained collective bargaining power and better access to veterinary services and high-quality fodder.

Future Outlook

The success of the Awadh region is serving as a blueprint for the rest of Uttar Pradesh. The government intends to scale this model to every village, aiming to create a state-wide network of financially independent “Lakhpati Didis” who drive the rural economy while ensuring a consistent supply of quality dairy for the urban market.
