The ‘Forgotten Nandi’: The Silent Force Behind India’s Dairy Growth

New Delhi: Milk remains a cornerstone of human nutrition and rural livelihoods in India, which today stands as the world’s largest milk producer, contributing nearly one-fourth of global output. The dairy sector sustains over eight crore farmers, most of them small and marginal, for whom milk provides a steady source of daily income.

The ‘Forgotten Nandi’: The Silent Force Behind India’s Dairy Growth

At the heart of this success story lies a less visible but critical contributor—the breeding bull, often described metaphorically as the “forgotten Nandi,” symbolizing strength, fertility, and genetic power.

Women and Welfare Schemes Driving Growth

Women continue to form the backbone of India’s dairy economy, managing everything from animal care to milk marketing. Government initiatives such as the Rashtriya Gokul Mission have played a pivotal role in improving indigenous breeds through genetic upgradation.

Complementing this is the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme, which has strengthened veterinary services through Mobile Veterinary Units, bringing treatment, vaccination, and minor surgeries directly to farmers’ doorsteps.

Innovations such as Ayurveda and Ethno-Veterinary Medicine are also gaining traction, offering cost-effective and sustainable alternatives for managing diseases like mastitis while reducing antibiotic dependency.

White Revolution 2.0: A New Push

The recently launched Standard Operating Procedure for White Revolution 2.0 aims to further expand milk procurement, strengthen cooperative systems, and create rural employment, particularly for women. The programme, spanning 2024–2029, envisions a significant rise in milk collection through organized channels.

The Science Behind the ‘Nandi’

While cows and buffaloes produce milk, genetic improvement begins with the bull. The productivity of an entire herd depends largely on the quality of breeding males.

Scientific breeding tools such as artificial insemination (AI) have revolutionized the sector by enabling the use of superior germplasm. Currently, around one-third of India’s breedable cattle and buffalo population is covered under AI services, with expansion driven by the National Artificial Insemination Programme.

Free doorstep AI services in many regions are making advanced breeding accessible to small farmers, significantly improving:

  • Milk yield
  • Fertility rates
  • Overall herd quality

Advanced Reproductive Technologies

Cutting-edge technologies are accelerating genetic gains:

  • In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) for multiplying elite germplasm
  • Sex-sorted semen to increase female calf births
  • Progeny testing to identify superior bulls based on offspring performance

These tools allow a single high-quality bull to influence large populations over generations, enhancing productivity at scale.

Modern research has further revealed that sperm carries not just genetic information but also molecular signals influencing embryo development and offspring health. Techniques like Computer-Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA) are improving the accuracy of fertility assessment.

Securing the Future of Dairy

India’s dairy success is not built on milk production alone—it rests on the genetic foundation of its livestock. Recognizing the role of bulls as “silent genetic engines” is essential for sustaining long-term growth.

As the country moves into the next phase of dairy development, investments in scientific breeding, superior genetics, and reproductive technologies will be crucial to ensuring both productivity and sustainability.
