Tomorrow is World Milk Day; Dairy farmers say it’s a dark day for Kerala dairy farmers

June 1 is observed as World Milk Day to raise awareness about milk production and the benefits of milk products worldwide. The day also aims to understand the importance of recognizing milk as a global food.

However, the Kerala Dairy Farmers Association, a group of dairy farmers in Kerala, has announced that June 1 will be observed as Black Day.
The Kerala Dairy Farmers Association has held several protests and submitted petitions demanding an increase in the procurement price of milk to Rs 70 and a revision of the milk price chart, but has decided to observe June 1 as a black day in protest of the lack of favorable decisions. The Kerala Dairy Farmers Association office bearers announced that a meeting of dairy farmers and a protest demonstration will be held in all dairy associations in Kerala on the morning of June 1.

The unofficial report of the government shows that the number of cows in Kerala has decreased by 32.15 percent. There is a decrease of about 4.3 lakh cattle compared to the 2019 census. The reason for the attrition of farmers is the huge gap between the cost of production and income. Therefore, a large number of small and medium farmers have abandoned cows. The Dairy Farmers Association clarified that the youth are also not coming to this sector as it has become clear that even after working for a whole day, they will not get a better income.

There has been a huge increase in the price of fodder, wages of workers, electricity, medicine, fuel, and medical expenses, while the price of milk has not been increased. That is what is putting farmers in a crisis. Many dairy groups have closed due to the attrition of farmers. Many are in a state of need of closure due to low milk procurement. Therefore, the Kerala Dairy Farmers Association has demanded that Milma and the Kerala government take steps to ensure that dairy farmers receive at least Rs 70 from the Milk Society in order to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production, provide clean milk to the people, address the acute unemployment in Kerala, and improve the health of the public.

What is the reason for the decline in the dairy sector? What is clear from the census? You can read the responses of dairy farmers in the June issue of Karshakashri. Farmers also share marketing approaches that help them survive the low procurement prices.
