Tripura: Tripura is stepping up efforts to strengthen its dairy sector through a cooperative-led expansion programme being implemented with technical support from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).

The initiative aims to increase local milk procurement, strengthen village-level dairy cooperatives, expand processing infrastructure and improve the availability of milk and value-added dairy products across the state.
Farmer Network to Expand to 10,000 Producers
A key target under the programme is to increase the number of registered farmer-suppliers associated with the Gomati Cooperative Milk Union from 6,642 to 10,000.
The expansion is expected to be supported by the establishment of 52 new primary milk cooperative societies in areas with potential for increased dairy production.
The cooperative system is intended to provide farmers with a more organised channel for daily milk procurement while reducing dependence on informal marketing channels.
Government dairy support programmes, including assistance related to animal health, feed and credit, are also expected to support the expansion of the producer network.
NDDB Partnership to Strengthen Dairy Operations
The Animal Resources Development Department of Tripura, Gomati Cooperative Milk Union and NDDB have entered into a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding to support the development of the state’s dairy sector.
Under the partnership, NDDB is providing technical support in areas including breed improvement, milk procurement, processing technology and cooperative development.
The programme also envisages improvements in milk testing, automated milk collection and digital procurement systems at primary cooperative centres. These measures are aimed at improving transparency in procurement and strengthening the efficiency of the rural milk-collection network.
40,000-Litre Plant Commissioned at Bamutia
Processing capacity is another major component of the expansion.
A new dairy manufacturing plant at Bamutia has been commissioned with a processing capacity of 40,000 litres per day. It will operate alongside the existing Gomati Dairy infrastructure and is expected to provide additional capacity during periods of higher milk availability.
The Gomati Dairy facility has itself expanded considerably since its establishment in 1982, when it had a daily milk-handling capacity of around 5,000 litres.
The additional processing infrastructure is expected to strengthen the union’s ability to handle locally procured milk and reduce capacity constraints during the flush season.
Focus on Value-Added Dairy Products
Gomati Cooperative Milk Union’s product portfolio includes four packaged liquid milk variants, two types of paneer, ghee, ice cream, packaged drinking water and nearly 75 varieties of traditional confectionery products.

The expansion of processing and packaging infrastructure is expected to support greater production of value-added dairy products and extend the reach of Tripura’s cooperative dairy products into urban markets.
Addressing Tripura’s Milk Supply Gap
The dairy expansion comes against the backdrop of a reported gap between local milk production and consumer demand in Tripura, resulting in dependence on milk supplies from outside the state.
The state government’s strategy is therefore focused on increasing local production and procurement while strengthening the infrastructure needed to collect, chill, process and distribute milk.
For farmers, a larger cooperative procurement network could provide more consistent market access, while improved milk testing based on fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) can support transparent payment systems.
Cooperative Model at the Centre of Expansion
The Tripura initiative reflects a broader effort to strengthen organised dairy systems in the Northeast by connecting smallholder farmers, cooperative milk collection, processing infrastructure and retail markets.
The success of the programme will depend on expanding the farmer base, improving milk productivity, maintaining efficient cold-chain logistics and increasing the share of value-added products in the cooperative’s business.
With NDDB providing technical support and the state expanding procurement and processing infrastructure, Tripura is seeking to reduce its milk supply deficit while creating a more organised and sustainable market for rural dairy producers.
