ANAND: A women-led agri-tech startup in Gujarat has developed an early pregnancy detection kit aimed at helping dairy farmers identify pregnancy in livestock at an earlier stage and improve herd management.
Big Nano Ventures, founded by entrepreneur Komal Kalantry, has developed a technology for pregnancy detection in cows, buffaloes, sheep and goats. The startup says its kit can detect pregnancy at approximately 28–35 days and deliver results in less than 10 minutes.
Kit Designed for Convenient Livestock Pregnancy Detection
According to Kalantry, the test is designed as a pain-free procedure for animals and is intended to make pregnancy detection more accessible to livestock farmers.
She said early information on pregnancy could support timely decisions related to animal care, productivity and calf management.
The startup says its technology has so far been used on more than 27,000 animals.
The reported use figure reflects the number of animals tested by the technology; it should not, by itself, be interpreted as an independent validation of the kit’s diagnostic accuracy.
Startup Receives National Recognition
The technology has also received national recognition, with President Droupadi Murmu felicitating the startup for its work in animal health, according to the startup and the AIC Anand Foundation.
Nikunj Soni, CEO of AIC Anand Foundation, said Big Nano Ventures was invited to Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive the national honour.

He said early pregnancy detection in dairy animals could provide farmers with timely information for managing their herds and addressing challenges associated with dairy production.
Anand Agricultural University Supports Research and Validation
Kalantry said the startup’s development journey was supported by the incubation ecosystem at Anand Agricultural University (AAU).
According to her, the university provided mentorship and financial assistance during the research and development process and helped the startup connect with government agricultural centres during validation activities.
The startup is now working towards developing additional livestock diagnostic solutions, she said.
AIC Anand Foundation Incubates Agri and Dairy Startups
The AIC Anand Foundation, based at Anand Agricultural University, operates as an incubation hub supporting innovation in agriculture, dairy and allied sectors.
The foundation says its incubation ecosystem has supported more than 80 agri-startups, providing entrepreneurs with access to mentoring, institutional networks and other forms of startup support.
Women Increasingly Participating in Agricultural Entrepreneurship
Dr M. P. Patel, Vice-Chancellor of Anand Agricultural University, highlighted women’s participation in the university’s entrepreneurship initiatives.
According to Patel, women have accounted for 52% of innovators selected through the university’s entrepreneurship programme since its inception in 1948.
The development of livestock diagnostic technologies by women-led startups reflects the expanding role of entrepreneurship and technology in addressing practical challenges faced by India’s dairy and livestock sectors.
Potential for Dairy Herd Management
Early pregnancy identification can provide farmers with information needed for decisions concerning breeding management, nutrition, animal care and expected calving, subject to the reliability and appropriate use of the diagnostic method.
For dairy farmers, technologies that can provide timely reproductive information could become useful tools for herd-management programmes, particularly where access to conventional veterinary diagnostic services is limited.
Further independent validation, adoption at field scale and integration with veterinary services will be important in determining the technology’s broader application across India’s dairy sector.
