Southern Dairy and Food Conclave Concludes, Showcasing Blend of Technology and Tradition

Kozhikode: The three-day Southern Dairy and Food Conclave (SDFC 2026) concluded on a positive note at the Calicut Trade Centre (Varghese Kurien Nagar) on Saturday, leaving visitors inspired by a seamless fusion of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship.

The exhibition spaces evolved into informal learning zones, especially for school students, while general visitors experienced a vivid display of how digital innovation and age-old practices can coexist. Across the halls, live demonstrations drew steady crowds, turning stalls into interactive classrooms on dairy development, traditional industries, and food safety.

Visitors lingered at sections showcasing pottery, watching artisans skillfully mould clay on spinning wheels, while nearby, coir-making units demonstrated the labour-intensive process of fibre twisting by hand. Traditional crafts such as weaving, bamboo work, and clay pottery were displayed alongside modern dairy equipment and technologies. Exhibits of rice varieties, seeds, and spices added to the diversity of the showcase.

For young visitors, the conclave offered hands-on learning. Nihara, a 10-year-old student from Providence School, said the exhibition helped her understand food systems and the role of cattle in daily life. “I understood how milk and tasty food come from animals,” she said.

College students also found the experience enriching. Merin Jose, a third-year nursing student from Baby Memorial College, noted that the pottery demonstration stood out. “We came as part of a Milma visit assignment, but watching the pottery being made was very interesting,” she said.

At the Olavanna Coir Vyavasaya Sangham stall, women workers demonstrated both manual and machine-assisted coir-making methods. Beena C.M., who has worked in the sector for over 15 years, highlighted the challenges involved. “This work is very hard on the hands despite the wages being low. Still, this is what we know, and so we continue,” she said.

Several government and non-government institutions participated in the conclave, including the Kerala Police, Forest Department, Spices Research Centre, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala Livestock Development Board, and Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala.

Technology-driven exhibits attracted significant attention. At the stall of Indian Dairy Machinery Company (IDMC), a subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board, service technician Aneesh explained how mechanised milking and processing equipment can reduce physical strain and improve hygiene. “Many farmers leave dairy farming because manual milking is difficult. Machines can reduce that burden and help small farmers continue,” he said.

In another highlight, a firm from Indore showcased rapid testing kits designed to detect milk adulteration, antibiotic residues, and aflatoxins, underlining the growing role of science and safety in the dairy sector.

The conclave successfully brought together education, innovation, and tradition, reinforcing the evolving yet rooted nature of India’s dairy and food systems.
