Odisha CM Warns Cattle Smugglers, Urges Farmers to Embrace Dairy

Bhubaneswar, Jan 21 (IANS): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday issued a stern warning to cattle smugglers in the state, asking them to desist from illegal activities or face stringent punishment.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while inaugurating the three-day Matsya-Pranee Samavesh Odisha (MPSO-2026) conclave in Bhubaneswar.

Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi also urged farmers to diversify their livelihoods by taking up fish farming, dairy farming and animal husbandry, noting that around 92 per cent of Odisha’s farmers are small and marginal.

“Owing to population growth, landholdings are likely to shrink further. Therefore, along with agriculture, farmers should also take up fish farming, dairy farming and animal husbandry. To support this, the government has implemented several schemes,” he said.

Highlighting the State’s flagship Mukhyamantri Kamadhenu Yojana, Majhi said the scheme was launched with an outlay of ₹1,400 crore to promote dairy development. Under the programme, farmers are provided financial assistance of up to 70 per cent to encourage rearing of cross-bred high milk-yielding cows and buffaloes.

So far, ₹262 crore has been disbursed to 4.73 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme. The Chief Minister noted that in the last one and a half years, milk production in Odisha has increased by 1.35 lakh litres.

He further said that an artificial insemination programme using sex-sorted semen has benefited 2.30 lakh cattle rearers, ensuring a higher proportion of female calves and improving herd productivity.

CM Majhi also stated that the annual income of an average farming family has crossed ₹61,000, attributing the rise to effective implementation of schemes such as Samruddha Krushak Yojana, PM-Kisan, CM-Kisan, and Subhadra Yojana.

Reiterating the government’s long-term vision, he said Odisha is determined to become self-reliant in fish, meat, poultry and egg production. He noted that the state currently ranks fourth in fish production and is working toward securing the top position nationally.
