Buenos Aires: Argentina, one of South America’s leading milk producers, is facing a severe profitability crisis in its dairy industry, marked by plant closures, underutilized capacity, delayed payments, and growing financial stress across companies.

Paradoxically, the crisis comes at a time of strong production performance. National milk output reached 11.6 billion litres in 2025, the highest in a decade and the second-highest ever recorded, reflecting a 9.7% increase from the previous year, according to official data from the National Dairy Directorate.
However, industry experts point to a structural imbalance: rising production has not translated into profitability.
“The central issue is the lack of profitability,” said Luciano Di Tella, director of Yatasto and member of the Association of Small and Medium Dairy Enterprises. “It affects both farmers and processors, driven by multiple factors including cost pressures and changing consumption patterns.”
Shift Toward Low-Margin Products
While overall dairy consumption has remained relatively stable, its composition has changed significantly. Demand has shifted toward low-margin products such as pouch milk, carton-packaged milk, and soft cheeses—items typically sold at near-cost prices.
In contrast, value-added products like specialty cheeses, flavored yogurts, and dairy desserts—which traditionally generate higher profits—have lost market share.

“Companies are maintaining revenues, but with products that yield minimal margins,” Di Tella explained. “Earlier, processed dairy products were the main profit drivers.”
Rising Costs and Market Pressures
The situation is further aggravated by:
- High input and energy costs
- Limited access to affordable financing
- Heavy and complex tax structures
- Operational inefficiencies previously masked by inflation
With around 75% of milk consumed domestically, excess production has led to rising inventories and downward pressure on prices, squeezing margins even further.
Regional Impact and Industry Strain
The crisis is most visible in the Pampas region—Argentina’s dairy heartland—including provinces like Santa Fe, Córdoba, and Buenos Aires Province.
Several plants have scaled down or halted operations, while some long-established companies have shut down entirely. In Santa Fe, industrial data indicates a year-on-year production decline of over 10% in early 2026, highlighting sectoral fragility beyond national output figures.
Structural Shifts and Employment Trends
The industry is also undergoing structural changes:
- Automation is reducing manual labor but creating demand for technical roles.
- Some struggling firms are considering conversion into worker-run cooperatives.
- Others remain shut due to lack of capital and operational inefficiencies.
Industry Calls for Reform
Industry leaders are urging the government to introduce:
- Easier access to credit for modernization and innovation
- Tax reforms to reduce hidden and overlapping levies
- Simplification of interprovincial taxation systems
Di Tella also criticized logistical inefficiencies, noting that administrative delays at municipal checkpoints often cost more than the taxes themselves.
Outlook
Despite strong production fundamentals, Argentina’s dairy sector faces a critical turning point. Without structural reforms and improved profitability, the sustainability of mid-sized firms—and the rural economies they support—remains at risk.
