Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu – Renowned for its rich flavour, traditional craftsmanship and deep cultural roots, Uthukuli Vennai (Uthukuli Butter) is steadily moving towards official Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, highlighting one of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated dairy products.

Produced in the small town of Uthukuli in Tiruppur district, the butter has earned a reputation over generations for its distinctive taste, creamy texture and artisanal production methods. The region has long been a centre for dairy farming, making milk production and butter manufacturing an integral part of the local economy.
The product took a significant step towards legal recognition after an application for Geographical Indication (GI) status under Class 29 (Food Stuffs) was filed with the GI Registry of the Government of India on April 9, 2024. The application is currently at the pre-examination stage.
A Tradition Rooted in Dairy Heritage
Unlike mass-produced commercial butter, Uthukuli butter continues to be manufactured using traditional dairy practices that have been preserved for centuries.
Local farmers convert fresh milk into curd, which is then churned using conventional methods to extract butter. The process involves minimal industrial intervention, allowing the product to retain its natural aroma, creamy consistency and mildly tangy flavour.
According to the GI application, the butter is distinguished by its pale white to light cream colour, non-glossy appearance, smooth texture and comparatively longer shelf life. These qualities are closely linked to the region’s geographical conditions and the traditional methods of production that have been passed down through generations.
A Culinary and Cultural Icon
Beyond its commercial value, Uthukuli butter occupies a special place in Tamil Nadu’s culinary and cultural traditions.
The butter is widely used in temples for religious offerings and forms an essential ingredient in many South Indian households. It is commonly served with hot idlis, dosas and pongal, while also being used in preparing sweets and festive delicacies where its rich flavour enhances traditional recipes.
Its purity and authentic taste have made it a preferred choice among consumers seeking naturally produced dairy products.
GI Tag Could Boost Rural Dairy Economy
The proposed GI tag is expected to strengthen the identity of Uthukuli butter while protecting its traditional production practices from imitation.
Recognition under the GI framework could enhance market value, improve branding opportunities and create better income prospects for local dairy farmers and small-scale butter producers. It would also help preserve the region’s centuries-old dairy heritage by encouraging continued adherence to traditional manufacturing techniques.
Growing Demand for Traditional Dairy Products
The move comes amid increasing consumer interest in authentic, region-specific dairy products that emphasize natural processing, traceability and heritage.
As India’s dairy sector expands and premium dairy products gain popularity, traditional products such as Uthukuli butter are attracting renewed attention for their artisanal quality and cultural significance.
With GI recognition under consideration, Uthukuli butter is well positioned to strengthen its reputation as one of Tamil Nadu’s most iconic dairy delicacies while opening new opportunities for rural producers and the state’s traditional dairy industry.
