Bengaluru Consumers Prefer Branded Ghee but Remain Concerned About Purity, Survey Finds

Bengaluru: Branded ghee continues to dominate consumer preference in Bengaluru, but concerns over purity and adulteration remain significant among households, according to a recent survey conducted by LocalCircles.

Bengaluru Consumers Prefer Branded Ghee but Remain Concerned About Purity, Survey Finds

The survey, which received responses from 10,215 participants in Bengaluru and over 91,000 respondents nationwide, revealed that a majority of consumers are not fully confident about the purity and quality of the ghee they consume.

Only 28% of Bengaluru respondents said they were “very confident” about the quality and purity of their ghee. Meanwhile, 47% reported being only “somewhat confident,” while 23% expressed no confidence at all, indicating that food adulteration concerns continue to influence purchasing decisions.

The findings mirror the broader national trend, where six out of ten urban Indian households reported that they are not fully confident about the purity of commercially available ghee products.

The survey also found that branded ghee remains the preferred choice for most consumers, with brand reputation emerging as the single most important factor influencing purchase decisions. Only around 9% of respondents reported preparing ghee at home.

Industry stakeholders attribute consumer preference for established brands to greater trust in quality standards and food safety compliance. According to representatives of Bengaluru’s hotel industry, restaurants largely rely on branded ghee products, particularly those supplied by well-established dairy brands, and seldom switch to alternatives except during supply constraints.

Ghee consumption levels among households were found to be relatively moderate. Around 63% of respondents stated that their household consumes less than one kilogram of ghee per month. The largest consumer segment (28%) reported monthly consumption between 500 grams and one kilogram, while 27% consume between one and two kilograms.

Nutrition experts advise consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing ghee products. Unusually low-priced products, artificial buttery aromas, unnaturally bright yellow colour, or inconsistent grainy textures may warrant closer scrutiny. Consumers are also encouraged to verify FSSAI licence details and purchase products from trusted sources.

Health professionals further recommend consuming ghee in moderation as part of a balanced diet and suggest incorporating other edible oils such as groundnut, mustard, and sesame oil for routine cooking purposes.

The survey highlights the growing importance of food safety, transparency, and consumer trust in India’s dairy sector. As demand for premium and branded dairy products continues to rise, maintaining product authenticity and strengthening quality assurance mechanisms will remain critical for dairy processors and brands alike.
