Bengal could soon witness one of the biggest investments in its dairy sector as Amul, owned by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), is in advanced discussions to invest nearly ₹650 crore in the state. The investment is expected to support the establishment of Amul’s first fully owned dairy processing plant in West Bengal, marking a major expansion of the cooperative’s eastern India operations.

The move comes at a time when Amul is witnessing rapid growth in Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, where daily milk sales are estimated to have reached nearly 11 lakh litres per day (LLPD). At the same time, milk procurement across the Bengal belt has climbed to around 9 LLPD, highlighting the increasing scale of the company’s presence in the region.
Amul Eyes Expansion in Bengal
According to sources, Amul is currently evaluating multiple locations across West Bengal for the proposed dairy processing facility. The cooperative is reportedly considering two possible approaches for the expansion.
One option under evaluation is the creation of a large, centralised dairy processing plant that can cater to demand across multiple districts. The second possibility involves setting up a network of smaller feeder plants strategically spread across the state to improve logistics and address Bengal’s geographically dispersed market.
The final decision is expected to depend on factors such as milk procurement networks, transportation infrastructure, accessibility, and regional demand.
Why Bengal is Becoming Important for Amul
West Bengal has emerged as a significant market for dairy products, driven by rising urban demand and changing consumption patterns. Kolkata, being one of eastern India’s largest metropolitan markets, has played a major role in this growth.
Amul’s reported milk sales of nearly 11 LLPD in Kolkata alone underline the scale of demand in the city. Meanwhile, procurement in Bengal touching approximately 9 LLPD suggests that the cooperative is also strengthening its supply chain by working closely with local dairy farmers and producers.
A fully owned dairy processing plant in Bengal could help Amul improve operational efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and expand product availability across eastern India.

Potential Impact on Bengal’s Economy
If the proposed ₹650 crore investment materialises, it could provide a significant boost to Bengal’s manufacturing and food processing ecosystem.
The project is expected to create employment opportunities, strengthen local dairy infrastructure, and support rural livelihoods through increased milk procurement. It could also encourage greater participation of farmers in cooperative dairy systems while improving supply chain efficiency across the region.
The investment may further strengthen Bengal’s position as an emerging hub for food processing and industrial growth.
As discussions progress, all eyes will remain on where Amul decides to establish its first fully owned dairy processing plant in the state and how the project reshapes Bengal’s dairy landscape.
