In a post on X, the Chief Minister said that strengthening dairy production would help improve nutritional security, support farmers’ livelihoods and make the rural economy more resilient. He described the initiatives as part of the state’s broader effort to build a self-reliant Assam.

Low per capita milk availability highlights need for growth

Assam’s per capita milk availability remains below the national average, highlighting the need to increase local production and strengthen the dairy supply chain.

To address this gap, the state has set a target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk per day. The government is also providing direct milk subsidies to dairy farmers to encourage milk production and support farm incomes.

Mega dairy plants planned across the state

The government is planning to establish mega dairy processing plants at different locations across Assam. The proposed facilities are expected to expand processing capacity, improve milk handling and strengthen the organised dairy sector.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the commissioning of a milk processing plant in Sonitpur district, with an installed capacity of 20,000 litres per day. The facility is expected to contribute to the state’s processing infrastructure and improve the availability of processed milk.

Strengthening the dairy value chain

Achieving the production target will require coordinated development of milk collection, chilling, processing and distribution networks. Greater processing capacity could also create improved market opportunities for dairy farmers and support the growth of organised dairy businesses.

The government’s focus on subsidies and infrastructure development is intended to encourage greater participation in dairy farming while improving the sector’s ability to meet consumer demand.

Supporting rural livelihoods and nutrition

A sustained increase in milk production could contribute to rural employment, diversify farm incomes and improve access to milk and dairy products.

The Chief Minister said the measures would help establish a stronger dairy sector, supporting better nutrition, more secure farmer livelihoods and a resilient rural economy in Assam.
