AMRITSAR: Consumers in Amritsar and nearby areas will face higher milk prices from November 1, following a decision by local dairy associations to increase retail rates by ₹5 per litre.

The revision, agreed upon during meetings of regional dairy operators, is aimed at addressing rising production and operating costs faced by dairy farmers and local milk suppliers.

Rising input costs put pressure on dairy operations

Local dairy operators have cited increasing expenditure on cattle feed, green and dry fodder, veterinary medicines and labour as key reasons behind the price increase.

The cost of maintaining productive milch animals, including buffaloes and high-yielding crossbred cows, has also reportedly increased. Higher expenditure on animal nutrition and healthcare has added to the financial pressure on dairy businesses.

According to dairy operators, existing retail rates had become difficult to sustain as input costs continued to rise.

Local milk supply chain faces price adjustment

Amritsar’s liquid milk market includes organised dairy brands, cooperative suppliers, local dairy farms and neighbourhood milk vendors, commonly known as dudhis.

The announced ₹5-per-litre increase applies to the local retail milk supply covered by the dairy associations’ decision. The extent to which it affects individual vendors and organised dairy brands will depend on their respective pricing policies.

The revision follows similar price adjustments reported in other Punjab dairy markets, including Ludhiana, reflecting the pressure of rising production costs on local milk suppliers.

Festive and winter demand adds to market pressure

The price increase comes during a period of seasonal demand for milk and dairy products, including curd, paneer, khoya and traditional sweets.

While higher milk prices may add to household expenditure, dairy operators argue that improved retail realisations are necessary to maintain production economics and ensure the continued supply of quality milk.

Balancing consumer affordability and farmer sustainability

The latest revision highlights the continuing challenge of balancing affordable milk prices for consumers with the financial sustainability of dairy farming.

Local operators have called for measures to improve fodder availability, stabilise feed costs and provide access to affordable veterinary services.

The revised rates will take effect on November 1. The impact on consumers and dairy businesses will depend on how widely the increase is implemented across Amritsar’s local milk distribution network.
