Enforcement operations target khoya, paneer, ghee and sweets, with inspections extended to wholesale markets, food businesses and online delivery supply chains.
NEW DELHI : The Delhi Food Safety Department has destroyed more than 4,000 kg of food products, including khoya, paneer and sweets, during enforcement drives conducted over the past two months. Of the 290 samples tested, 85 were found unsafe or below prescribed standards, officials said on Friday.

According to an official statement, the department carried out 30 enforcement actions, intensifying inspections and sample collection during Navratri and the festive season, when demand for dairy products, sweets and other food items typically increases.
Inspections focus on dairy products and wholesale markets
The enforcement drive primarily targeted ghee, paneer, khoya and sweets. Inspections were conducted in vulnerable areas and wholesale markets, including Mori Gate Khoya Mandi, Okhla and Janakpuri.
In a recent operation at unlicensed sweet-manufacturing units in Nihal Vihar, officials identified 12 premises and destroyed approximately 400 kg of sweets. Fourteen samples were also collected for laboratory testing.
Surveillance extended to online platforms and institutional kitchens
The department expanded its inspection activities beyond conventional food businesses to cover restaurants, institutional clubs, banquet halls, retail outlets and food manufacturing units.
Inspections also covered e-commerce dark stores associated with platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Amazon and Reliance. Wholesalers selling food products through social media platforms, including YouTube and Instagram, were brought under surveillance.

Hospital kitchens were inspected to assess food safety and hygiene practices.
Special checks conducted during Navratri
During Navratri, officials carried out targeted checks on food products commonly consumed during fasting, including kuttu atta, samak rice, singhara atta and sabudana.
The department also acted on complaints received through CM Jansunwai and other public grievance channels.
In a separate bakery inspection drive, seven manufacturing and retail premises were inspected and 10 food samples collected. Improvement notices were recommended for two establishments following hygiene and regulatory compliance assessments.
Delhi government reiterates food safety commitment
Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said the department had been directed to maintain strict vigilance across the food supply chain, covering manufacturing units, wholesale markets, retail outlets, restaurants and online platforms.
He said inspections and sampling would continue, particularly during the festive and wedding seasons, to strengthen accountability among food business operators and protect consumers.
The department has also urged food businesses to maintain prescribed hygiene standards and comply with applicable food safety regulations.
The findings underline the importance of regular surveillance, laboratory testing and regulatory compliance in the dairy and food sectors, particularly during periods of increased consumer demand.
