Banas Dairy Launches Season 6 of Afforestation Drive, Targets Sowing One Crore Seedballs in Aravalli Hills

Palanpur: Banas Dairy has announced the launch of the sixth edition of its large-scale afforestation initiative, aiming to sow one crore (10 million) seedballs across the Aravalli hills surrounding Ambaji and Danta in Banaskantha district over the next 15 days.

Banas Dairy Launches Season 6 of Afforestation Drive, Targets Sowing One Crore Seedballs in Aravalli Hills

The initiative is part of the cooperative’s ongoing effort to develop the Aravalli mountain range into a ‘Green Wall’ through community participation and ecological restoration.

The ‘Seedball for Green Wall – Season 6’ campaign was formally launched at Rabariwas in Panchha village near Ambaji. The programme commenced with a tree plantation drive under the Government of India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam – 3.0’ initiative.

Speaking at the launch, Shankar Chaudhary, Chairman of Banas Dairy and Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, said the seedball campaign has delivered encouraging results over the past five years, with visible improvements in vegetation cover across several hilly regions, including Jesor and Ambaji.

To implement the campaign, Banas Dairy has deployed nine dedicated teams for seedball distribution and conservation activities across the Aravalli landscape.

Thousands of women livestock rearers associated with the cooperative have played a key role in preparing the seedballs using a mixture of cow dung and clay. This year’s campaign includes seeds from more than 22 indigenous tree species that are naturally suited to the ecology of the Aravalli hills. The selected species have been chosen for their ability to grow with minimal water requirements while enhancing local biodiversity.

The afforestation programme also carries significant environmental benefits. Vegetation in the Aravalli range contributes to soil conservation, groundwater recharge, and the preservation of important river systems, including the Banas, Saraswati, and Sabarmati rivers. Improved green cover is also expected to support local rainfall patterns and strengthen the region’s ecological resilience.

The initiative highlights how dairy cooperatives are increasingly contributing beyond milk procurement and processing by investing in sustainable rural development and environmental conservation. By involving livestock rearers and leveraging cattle-based resources such as cow dung for seedball preparation, Banas Dairy continues to integrate cooperative development with climate and sustainability objectives.

The sixth edition of the campaign further reinforces Banas Dairy’s commitment to ecological restoration and community-led environmental stewardship in one of western India’s most environmentally significant landscapes.
