Major Crackdown on Suspected Ghee Adulteration in Udaipur; 18,000 Litres Seized

The Food Safety Department carried out a major operation against food adulteration in Udaipur, conducting raids at two locations. Around 18,000 litres of suspected ghee were seized from a dairy unit in Amberi, while more than 42,000 kilograms of dairy products at Savina Agricultural Produce Market were found to be under investigation. A stock of ghee that had previously been declared unsafe and prohibited was also seized. Samples have been sent to the laboratory for testing.

Major Crackdown on Suspected Ghee Adulteration in Udaipur; 18,000 Litres Seized

Under the initiative of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and the guidance of Medical Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, an anti-adulteration campaign is being continuously conducted across Rajasthan. Acting on complaints regarding adulteration and quality issues in food products, the Central Enforcement Team of the Food Safety Commissionerate carried out joint inspections and enforcement actions at two locations in Udaipur district on Saturday. During the operation, 18,000 litres of ghee were seized on suspicion of adulteration.

Food Safety Commissioner Dr. T. Shubhamangala stated that under the leadership of Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh, the central and district teams jointly inspected Shri Madhur Dairy Farm and Food Products in Amberi, Udaipur. During the inspection, manufacturing and storage of ghee under various brands were found.

Large quantities of ghee branded as Udaipur Fresh Desi Ghee, Udaipur Fresh Cow Ghee, Madhya Desi Ghee, and Jayant Cow Ghee were found. Prepared ghee was also stored in tanks and various containers. Several tins were discovered without labels or mandatory information, which was considered non-compliant with food safety standards.

Suspicion of Artificial Coloring in Ghee

During the raid, bottles of food coloring were recovered from the premises. Preliminary findings indicated that yellow coloring may have been added to the ghee and marketed as cow ghee. Samples have been collected for detailed scientific analysis.

The investigation also revealed that butter used for ghee production was being procured from different sources, including Arihant Milk Products and Chandra Kamal in Madhya Pradesh. The butter was reportedly heated and processed into ghee.

Under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, four legal samples of ghee were collected and sent to the State Food Laboratory. To protect public health, approximately 18,000 litres of prepared ghee were seized on-site, and its sale and distribution were prohibited pending investigation.

Action at Agricultural Produce Market

As part of the campaign, the central team also inspected Mahalaxmi Trading Company, located in Savina Agricultural Produce Market, Udaipur. A large stock of ghee and dairy products of various brands was found.

The available stock included Mahavir Cow Ghee, Mahavir Desi Ghee, Mahalaxmi Ghee, Milk Food Ghee, Sonai Ghee, Kala Cow Ghee, Panchgavya Ghee, Amul, and Nova Ghee, along with other dairy products.

Preliminary verification revealed more than 42,000 kilograms of ghee, butter, and other dairy products, which are currently under detailed investigation.

Unsafe Ghee Batch Found

During the inspection, stock of Mahavir Brand Ghee (Batch No. 1) was found. Notably, this batch had previously been declared unsafe food by the Rajasthan Food Safety Commissioner, and its sale, distribution, and storage had already been prohibited.

Seizure of Prohibited Ghee and Legal Action

Since prohibited and unsafe ghee was found in stock, the central team immediately seized it and banned its sale and distribution. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against the concerned establishments.

The Food Safety Department clarified that after receiving laboratory reports and completing the investigation, if violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 are confirmed, strict legal action will be taken against the concerned establishments, operators, and responsible individuals.

The operation involved Joint Commissioner Dr. Vijay Prakash Sharma, Food Safety Officers Vinod Sharma, Amit Sharma, Lokesh Sharma, and Devendra Singh Ranawat, along with Udaipur district Food Safety Officers Ashok Gupta and Narendra Singh.
