Maruti Suzuki to Set Up 10 TPD Biogas Plant in Haryana, Major Reduction in Carbon Emissions Expected

New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced that it will establish a 10-ton-per-day (TPD) biogas plant at its manufacturing facility in Kharkhoda. According to the company, the project will become operational during FY 2026–27 and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 9,490 tonnes annually.

Maruti Suzuki to Set Up 10 TPD Biogas Plant in Haryana, Major Reduction in Carbon Emissions Expected

Meeting 20% of the Plant’s Gas Requirement

The company stated that the new biogas facility will supply nearly 20% of the total gas requirement of the Kharkhoda manufacturing unit. This initiative is considered a significant step toward increasing the use of clean energy and making manufacturing operations more sustainable.

Expansion of Manesar Biogas Plant

Maruti Suzuki has also expanded the capacity of its existing biogas plant at Manesar.

  • Earlier capacity: 0.2 TPD
  • Expanded capacity: 0.7 TPD

The upgraded plant is expected to generate around 360,000 standard cubic meters of biogas annually.

At the Manesar facility, food waste, Napier grass, and paddy straw are converted into biogas through anaerobic digestion technology. This process not only helps utilize agricultural residues and organic waste efficiently but also contributes to environmental protection.

₹150 Crore Investment

The company plans to invest a total of ₹150 crore in both biogas projects. The primary objectives of this investment are:

  • Promoting the use of renewable energy.
  • Improving energy efficiency in manufacturing operations.
  • Reducing dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
  • Supporting sustainable industrial growth.

Support for Green Mobility

The announcement aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s broader sustainability strategy. The company noted that in August 2025, India’s Prime Minister inaugurated and launched the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, the company’s first battery-electric vehicle manufactured in India.

Maruti Suzuki has stated that these India-made electric vehicles will be exported to around 100 countries worldwide, strengthening India’s role as a global hub for electric vehicle production.

Significance of the Initiative

The Kharkhoda and Manesar biogas projects are expected to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
  • Increase the use of renewable energy in manufacturing.
  • Convert agricultural and organic waste into useful fuel.
  • Support India’s clean-energy and sustainability goals.
  • Promote greener and more environmentally friendly automobile production.

Overall, Maruti Suzuki’s investment in biogas infrastructure represents an important step toward lower-carbon manufacturing, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable industrial development in India.
