Jalandhar: Dairy farmers in Jalandhar have announced a ₹5 per litre hike in milk prices, effective April 1, citing rising production costs driven by fuel, fodder, and LPG shortages.
Following the revision:
- Cow milk price has increased from ₹60 to ₹65 per litre
- Buffalo milk price has risen from ₹70 to ₹75 per litre
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Khalsa Dairy Society at Jamsher Dairy Complex.
Fodder Shortage and Cost Escalation
Dairy farmers identified fodder scarcity as the primary concern, worsened by monsoon flooding that disrupted availability.
Balwinder Singh, head of the Khalsa Dairy Society, said farmers are struggling to sustain operations amid rising input costs.

Livestock Costs Surge
The cost of purchasing milch animals has also increased sharply:
- Buffalo calves: ₹1 lakh → ₹2 lakh
- Cow calves: ₹40,000 → ₹90,000
This has made expansion of dairy farms increasingly difficult.
Fuel and LPG Add Pressure
Rising fuel prices have increased:
- Transportation costs of milk
- Operational expenses
Additionally, shortage of LPG has impacted the production of dairy products such as:
- paneer
- khoya
making value-added dairy processing more expensive.
Impact on Consumers and Sector
The price hike reflects a broader trend across the dairy sector, where:
- Input costs are rising faster than returns
- Farmers are under financial pressure
- Consumers are likely to face higher milk prices
Experts warn that unless input costs stabilise, further price increases may follow, affecting both producers and consumers.
