From Rural Maharashtra to National Dairy Transformation
As India celebrates its position as the world’s largest milk producer, the story of the country’s dairy transformation is incomplete without acknowledging the contributions of visionary entrepreneurs who helped modernize the sector. Among them, few have had as lasting an impact as Parshuram Bhaskar Chitale, widely known as Nanasaheb Chitale.

Today, India’s dairy industry contributes significantly to rural livelihoods, supports millions of farming families, and forms one of the largest agricultural value chains in the world. However, this success is the result of decades of investment in farmer development, scientific livestock management, processing infrastructure, and technological innovation.
Nanasaheb Chitale played a pivotal role in advancing many of these transformations.
The Foundation of Chitale Dairy
The Chitale dairy journey began in 1939 when Bhaskar Ganesh Chitale established a dairy enterprise in Bhilwadi, located in Maharashtra’s Sangli district.
Even before India’s independence, milk and dairy products from Bhilwadi were being supplied to urban markets, including Mumbai. What started as a regional dairy operation would eventually evolve into one of India’s most recognized private dairy enterprises.
A major turning point came when Nanasaheb Chitale joined the family business in the late 1940s and began identifying structural challenges limiting dairy sector growth.
Bringing Science into Dairy Farming
Recognizing the need for professional expertise, Nanasaheb pursued formal dairy education and completed the Indian Dairy Diploma in Dairying and Animal Husbandry in 1959 from the National Dairy Research Institute’s South Campus in Bengaluru.
At a time when scientific dairy education was rare in India, this training exposed him to modern concepts in:
- Dairy processing
- Livestock management
- Animal breeding
- Milk quality systems
- Dairy economics
Upon returning to Bhilwadi, Nanasaheb and his brother Kakasaheb Chitale began implementing scientific dairy practices that were uncommon in rural India at the time.
Strengthening Livestock Healthcare
During the 1960s, access to veterinary services in rural India remained limited.
Understanding that animal health was directly linked to milk productivity and farmer income, Nanasaheb promoted scientific livestock management across villages and personally supported dairy farmers through practical training and extension activities.
Farmers received guidance on:
- Animal health management
- Calf rearing
- Livestock breeding
- Scientific feeding practices
- Dairy farm management
He also encouraged rural youth to pursue veterinary education, helping create local support systems that strengthened dairy development at the grassroots level.
Improving Genetics and Productivity
Long before genetic improvement became a mainstream dairy strategy, Nanasaheb emphasized the importance of better livestock breeds.
Efforts were made to introduce and promote:
- Murrah Buffalo
- Mehsana Buffalo
- Jersey Cattle
- Holstein Friesian
However, Nanasaheb recognized that higher milk production alone would not transform dairy farming unless supported by efficient procurement, processing, distribution, and marketing systems.
This understanding shaped many of his future innovations.
Bringing Global Dairy Technology to India
In the early 1970s, Nanasaheb visited leading dairy-producing countries, including:
- France
- Italy
- Sweden
- United Kingdom
The international exposure helped him understand modern dairy technologies and supply-chain systems.
Many of these learnings were later adapted to Indian conditions.
Revolutionizing Milk Packaging
One of the most significant milestones came in 1974 when Chitale Dairy introduced commercial-scale polythene milk pouch packaging, becoming one of the earliest dairy organizations in India to adopt the technology.
Using advanced packaging equipment from France, the company helped shift dairy distribution away from traditional loose milk systems toward safer and more efficient packaged milk.
The innovation contributed to:
- Improved hygiene
- Reduced milk losses
- Extended shelf life
- Better consumer convenience
Today, milk pouch packaging is standard across India’s dairy industry.
Building Modern Dairy Infrastructure
Nanasaheb also pioneered several operational innovations that later became common industry practices, including:
- Crate-based milk distribution systems
- Insulated milk transportation
- Mechanized milking systems
- Organized artificial insemination services
- Scientific breeding programmes
These interventions strengthened productivity, logistics efficiency, and milk quality management.
Early Adoption of Digital Technologies
Long before digital transformation became a business priority, Chitale Dairy introduced computerized dairy operations in 1984.
Farmers began receiving computerized milk payment receipts, significantly improving transparency and trust.
Subsequent innovations included:
- RFID-based animal monitoring
- Rural para-veterinary service networks
- Dairy skill development programmes
- Digital dairy management systems
The organization consistently demonstrated a willingness to adopt emerging technologies to improve farmer outcomes.
Advancing Genetic Improvement
Nanasaheb strongly supported genetic advancement as a pathway to higher dairy productivity.
Through collaborations with international breeding organizations such as ABS Global and Genus plc, Chitale Dairy helped bring advanced breeding technologies to Indian farmers.

A notable achievement was the introduction of Sexcel technology, which improves the likelihood of female calf births, enabling dairy farmers to build more productive herds and improve long-term profitability.
Today, Chitale Genus ABS India produces approximately 50 lakh semen straws annually, supporting livestock improvement programmes across India.
From Village Enterprise to Global Brand
Over the decades, Chitale Dairy evolved from a village-based dairy business into one of India’s most respected private dairy companies.
The organization now works with more than one lakh farmers and processes millions of litres of milk every day.
Its portfolio includes:
- Milk
- Ghee
- Cheese
- Paneer
- Buttermilk
- Lassi
- Flavoured milk
- Value-added dairy products
The company has also expanded into international markets through exports of dairy and food products.
Among its most notable achievements is becoming the world’s largest producer of Shrikhand, one of India’s most iconic traditional dairy products.
A Legacy Beyond Business
At 92 years of age, Nanasaheb Chitale continues to serve as Chairman Emeritus of the Chitale Group.
His legacy extends far beyond the success of a single company. It reflects a broader vision that viewed dairy development as an integrated ecosystem combining:
- Farmer prosperity
- Scientific livestock management
- Technology adoption
- Supply-chain efficiency
- Rural entrepreneurship
- Value-added processing
As India’s dairy industry enters a new era focused on sustainability, productivity, exports, and digital transformation, Nanasaheb Chitale’s journey offers an enduring lesson: lasting agricultural progress is built through innovation, institutions, and long-term commitment to farmers.
His contribution remains an important chapter in the story of how India became the world’s dairy powerhouse.
