Packaged paneer, rising protein consumption and tighter scrutiny of analogue products create a larger opportunity for the Erode-based dairy company.
Chennai: Paneer is emerging as the key growth engine for Milky Mist Dairy Food Ltd, as the recently listed Erode-based dairy company enters a new phase of expansion driven by the shift from loose and unbranded products towards packaged, organised dairy.

With quarterly revenue moving towards the ₹1,000-crore mark, Milky Mist sees substantial headroom in the paneer market, where the overwhelming majority of production remains in the unorganised sector.
“Paneer will continue to be the star product for Milky Mist,” said K. Rathnam, CEO, Milky Mist Dairy Food Ltd.
Organised paneer market offers significant headroom
Milky Mist estimates that around 90–94% of paneer production remains in the unorganised sector, while organised players account for only about 6–7%.
The company has a paneer production capacity of around 150 tonnes per day, which it says is among the largest under a single roof in India. However, utilisation is currently only around 50–60%, allowing the company to increase output substantially without requiring immediate capacity expansion.
Milky Mist estimates that it commands approximately 20% of the organised paneer market.
The relatively low penetration of organised brands provides significant room for companies that can offer consumers consistent quality, packaging, food-safety assurance and nationwide availability.
Paneer market growing rapidly
Industry estimates put the overall Indian paneer market at approximately ₹97,500 crore, with the organised segment accounting for only around 5%.
The category is estimated to be growing at approximately 20% annually, while a faster shift away from analogue paneer could potentially push volume growth closer to 25%.
Milky Mist’s own paneer volumes are growing at around 34%, significantly ahead of the broader category.
“We are growing at more than twice the rate at which the paneer sector is growing,” Rathnam said.
Analogue paneer scrutiny could accelerate organised shift
The company also sees an opportunity from increasing regulatory scrutiny of analogue paneer, in which vegetable fats or other non-dairy ingredients are used to replace some or all milk components.
As food-safety authorities intensify action against misleading representation and non-compliant products, consumers and food-service businesses could increasingly favour branded dairy products with clearer ingredient declarations and stronger quality assurance.
For organised dairy companies, this could accelerate the transition from loosely marketed products to packaged and traceable paneer.
The potential shift is particularly important because paneer is widely sold through local dairies, restaurants, caterers and informal retail channels, where product consistency and traceability can vary considerably.
Protein trend supports demand
Beyond food-safety considerations, Milky Mist is benefiting from a broader consumer shift towards protein-rich foods.
Paneer has emerged as an important vegetarian protein source, supporting demand among urban consumers, fitness-focused consumers and households seeking convenient value-added dairy products.
Milky Mist estimates that India’s value-added dairy market is growing at around 15–18%, while its own value growth is approximately 35–38%.

The company expects growth opportunities not only in paneer but also across categories such as ice cream and yoghurt.
India’s dairy market is shifting towards value addition
Liquid milk continues to dominate India’s dairy market, accounting for an estimated 65% of the approximately ₹21,318 billion market.
However, value-added categories are steadily becoming more important.
| Dairy Category | Estimated Share of Indian Dairy Market |
|---|---|
| Liquid milk | 65% |
| Ghee | 8% |
| Yoghurt | 7% |
| Paneer | 4.6% |
| Ice cream | 2.5% |
The numbers highlight the structural opportunity for dairy companies to move consumers towards higher-value products rather than relying predominantly on liquid milk.
Milky Mist’s next growth phase
For Milky Mist, paneer provides an unusual combination of large market size, low organised penetration, strong category growth and available production capacity.
The company can potentially increase paneer sales by improving utilisation of existing capacity before making major investments in additional plants.
At the same time, expanding distribution, strengthening the packaged-product portfolio and building consumer trust around quality and food safety could help the company capture a greater share of the organised market.
The bigger opportunity is therefore not simply selling more paneer. It is participating in the formalisation of India’s paneer market.
As consumers increasingly demand convenience, quality consistency, protein-rich foods and greater transparency about ingredients, the shift from loose and informal dairy products towards branded, packaged alternatives could provide Milky Mist with a powerful long-term growth runway.
