Verka Milk: On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), in collaboration with the Verka Milk Plant, Mohali, has launched an innovative initiative to reduce plastic waste. Under this program, a mobile milk vending van has been introduced at the ATS Casa Espana residential complex in Mohali, allowing consumers to purchase fresh milk without the use of plastic pouches.

This initiative is part of PPCB’s campaign against Single-Use Plastic (SUP). Its objective is to encourage consumers to adopt practices that reduce plastic waste at the source itself.
“Same Milk, No Plastic” Campaign
PPCB and Verka have named this initiative “Same Milk, No Plastic.” Under the scheme, consumers can purchase fresh Verka milk at a discounted price of ₹64 per liter, compared to the regular price of ₹66 per liter for milk sold in plastic pouches.
Residents are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers, bottles, or vessels. This not only reduces plastic consumption but also promotes traditional and environmentally friendly habits.
Expected Reduction of 600 Plastic Pouches Daily
The vending machine has a capacity of approximately 300 liters of milk and will operate daily at ATS Casa Espana. According to officials, if the machine operates at full capacity, it could eliminate the use of nearly 600 plastic milk pouches every day in just one residential society.
Estimates suggest that a family purchasing around 2 liters of milk per day through this vending system could help prevent approximately 4 kilograms of plastic waste from reaching landfills each year.
Plans for Expansion Across Punjab
PPCB officials stated that along with better waste management, changing consumer behavior is essential for reducing plastic pollution. If this pilot project proves successful, it will be expanded to other housing societies in Mohali.

In the future, Verka plans to establish similar mobile vending vans or permanent milk vending units in other cities and towns across Punjab. The long-term goal is to gradually reduce dependence on single-use plastic milk packaging.
Appeal to Resident Welfare Associations
PPCB has invited Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and housing societies interested in introducing such milk vending facilities within their premises to contact the Board.
The initiative is being viewed as an important step toward environmental conservation and plastic pollution control. Experts believe that if this model is adopted on a larger scale, it could significantly reduce plastic waste across Punjab, benefiting both the environment and public health.
