Vijaya Dairy Row: Telangana Federation Alleges Adulteration in Andhra ‘Vijaya’ Ghee

Vijayawada/Hyderabad: The Telangana dairy federation has made serious allegations regarding the quality of ghee sold under the Vijaya Dairy label by the Andhra Pradesh Dairy Development Cooperative Federation.

Vijaya Dairy Row: Telangana Federation Alleges Adulteration in Andhra ‘Vijaya’ Ghee

At a press conference in Hyderabad, Telangana Vijaya Dairy chairman Gutta Amith Reddy claimed that laboratory testing indicated the possible presence of vegetable oil residues in a ghee sample marketed under the Vijaya brand.

NDDB Test Raises Concerns

According to Reddy, the sample was tested by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) after the Telangana federation received complaints about the product a few months ago.

“The test report indicated vegetable deposits in the ghee sample, which raises concerns that the product might be adulterated,” he said.

Reddy warned that such adulteration could pose health risks to consumers and damage the long-standing reputation of the Vijaya brand, which was created during the period of undivided Andhra Pradesh before the formation of Telangana.

Letter Sent to Andhra Pradesh Authorities

The Telangana federation chief said the issue had already been raised with officials in Andhra Pradesh.

“I wrote to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh five to six months ago highlighting our concerns about the franchise model and potential quality issues, but we have not received a response so far,” he stated.

Criticism of Franchise Model

Reddy also criticised the franchise system adopted by the Andhra Pradesh dairy federation, alleging that private companies are being allowed to manufacture and sell ghee under the Vijaya brand without being directly linked to cooperative milk procurement.

He contrasted this with the Telangana cooperative model, where milk is collected directly from farmers, chilled through bulk milk cooling units, processed in dairies, and then supplied to consumers and government institutions.

According to him, some private firms operating under franchise agreements may be sourcing products from outside the state and marketing them under the Vijaya label without having any connection with dairy farmers.

Large-Scale Sales in Hyderabad

Reddy claimed that one such franchise operator is selling around 100 tonnes of ghee every month in Hyderabad under the Vijaya brand, raising questions about quality control and traceability in these arrangements.

Wider Debate on Dairy Product Quality

Referring to the recent controversy surrounding alleged adulterated ghee used in prasadam at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams temple, he said dairy product quality has already become a matter of national concern.

He stressed that the Vijaya brand was originally built on the cooperative dairy model and should continue to operate in the interests of farmers while maintaining strict quality standards for consumers.
