The global dairy industry continues to witness remarkable growth, with India firmly maintaining its position as the world’s largest milk producer in 2025/26. According to recent international dairy production estimates, India and the European Union together account for more than half of global milk production, highlighting their dominant influence on the world’s dairy economy.

1.India Leads the World
With an estimated production of 221.4 million metric tonnes of milk, India remains the undisputed leader in global dairy production. The country’s dairy sector continues to be the backbone of rural livelihoods, supporting millions of farmers and contributing significantly to agricultural GDP.
Experts attribute India’s success to expanding cooperative networks, improved animal genetics, better veterinary services, and increasing adoption of scientific dairy farming practices.
“India’s dairy growth story is unique because it is driven by millions of smallholder farmers rather than large industrial farms. This makes the sector socially inclusive and economically resilient,” said dairy industry analysts.
2.European Union Maintains Strong Second Position
The European Union produced approximately 148.95 million metric tonnes, securing second place globally. The region remains a global powerhouse in value-added dairy products, including cheese, butter, milk powders, and specialty dairy ingredients.
The EU continues to dominate international dairy exports through advanced processing technologies, strict quality standards, and strong market access worldwide.
3.United States Strengthens Global Presence
The United States ranked third with 106.19 million metric tonnes of milk production. Large-scale commercial dairy farms, automation, precision feeding systems, and genetic advancements continue to drive productivity across the American dairy sector.
The U.S. remains one of the world’s largest exporters of dairy ingredients and milk powders.
4.China Expands Domestic Dairy Sector
With 41.51 million metric tonnes, China secured fourth place. Rising consumer demand for dairy products and growing awareness of nutritional benefits have encouraged substantial investments in modern dairy farms and processing infrastructure.
China’s long-term objective remains increasing self-sufficiency while reducing dependence on dairy imports.
5.Russia Focuses on Dairy Self-Reliance
Producing 33.9 million metric tonnes, Russia ranked fifth globally. Government support programs, investments in farm modernization, and domestic food security initiatives continue to strengthen the country’s dairy industry.
6.Brazil Leads South America
Brazil recorded 29.35 million metric tonnes of milk production, making it the largest producer in South America. The country’s extensive pasture-based systems and expanding domestic market continue to support steady dairy growth.
7.New Zealand: Small Nation, Global Dairy Giant
Although producing 21.8 million metric tonnes, New Zealand remains one of the most influential dairy exporters in the world. Its highly efficient pasture-based production system enables a significant proportion of milk output to be converted into export-oriented products.
Industry experts note that New Zealand’s impact on global dairy trade far exceeds what its production volume alone would suggest.

Outlook for the Global Dairy Industry
The global dairy sector is expected to continue evolving through technological innovation, sustainability initiatives, improved animal welfare practices, and growing consumer demand for nutritious dairy products. While developed dairy economies focus on efficiency and exports, emerging markets are increasingly investing in domestic production to enhance food security.
For India, the challenge ahead will be to transform its leadership in milk volume into leadership in dairy productivity, value addition, and global dairy exports. As the world’s largest producer, India’s next phase of growth may determine the future direction of the global dairy industry.
