Amit Shah on Sunday claimed that the sugar-free chocolate range of Amul has become the highest-selling sugar-free chocolate segment in India, highlighting the rapid expansion of the dairy cooperative’s fast-growing chocolate business.

Shah made the remarks while inaugurating the newly built Madhur Dairy milk processing and packaging facility in Gandhinagar.
“The sugar-free version of Amul chocolate is the number one selling sugar-free chocolate in India. It is a big achievement,” Shah said during the event.
However, no official market-share figures or category sales data were disclosed during the announcement.
Amul’s Chocolate Business Crosses ₹1,400 Crore
According to Jayan Mehta, the chocolate business of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul products, has quietly expanded into a major revenue category.

Mehta stated that Amul currently sells chocolates worth nearly ₹1,400 crore annually and recorded approximately 50 per cent growth in the segment during the last year.
Industry observers say the strong growth reflects increasing consumer demand for affordable premium chocolates, sugar-free confectionery, and domestically produced alternatives in India’s rapidly evolving packaged food market.
Madhur Dairy Unit Built at ₹128 Crore Cost
The inauguration also marked the launch of Madhur Dairy’s new automated milk processing and packaging facility at Dashela village in Gandhinagar district.
Officials said the plant has been developed at a cost of approximately ₹128 crore across 15 acres and is expected to significantly strengthen dairy processing infrastructure in the region.
The facility is designed to expand milk handling capacity, improve packaging efficiency, and support Gujarat’s growing cooperative dairy ecosystem through modern processing technology and quality assurance systems.

Amul Expanding Beyond Traditional Dairy
Industry analysts note that Amul’s chocolate business has become one of the cooperative’s fastest-growing non-liquid dairy categories.
Since establishing its chocolate manufacturing plant at Mogar near Anand in 2018, the brand has steadily expanded its presence in:
- chocolates,
- sugar-free confectionery,
- dark chocolate,
- premium cocoa products,
- and impulse snacking categories.
Experts say the company’s strong retail network and nationwide cooperative distribution model have helped Amul rapidly scale its packaged foods portfolio beyond milk and butter.
Growing Demand for Sugar-Free Products
The strong performance of Amul’s sugar-free chocolates also reflects broader consumer trends across India’s food sector, where demand for reduced-sugar and health-focused packaged products continues to increase.
Urban consumers are increasingly seeking alternatives positioned around:
- lower sugar content,
- diabetic-friendly formulations,
- functional nutrition,
- and healthier snacking options.
Analysts believe the segment could witness further growth as organised food companies continue investing in wellness-oriented product categories alongside traditional dairy expansion.
