Buenos Aires: Argentina’s dairy exports absorbed the majority of the country’s increased milk production during the first five months of 2026, highlighting the growing importance of international markets in balancing rising milk supplies alongside recovering domestic consumption.

According to the Argentine Observatory of Dairy Chains (OCLA), the country generated an additional 375 million litres of milk between January and May 2026. Of this incremental production, 65% was directed to export markets, while the remaining 35% was absorbed by the domestic market.
The data indicates that exports have become the primary outlet for Argentina’s expanding milk production, helping the dairy sector manage higher output while supporting market stability.
At the same time, domestic dairy demand continued its recovery after a sharp decline in 2024. Local consumption increased by 4% compared with the same period in 2025, adding approximately 132 million litres to the domestic market. The rebound follows a difficult period in 2024, when dairy consumption fell by nearly 19.5% during the first five months due to weaker consumer purchasing power.
OCLA noted that although domestic demand has largely recovered between 2025 and 2026, the improvement has been driven primarily by lower value-added dairy products, reflecting continued price sensitivity among consumers.
Meanwhile, stronger domestic and export demand has contributed to a reduction in inventories. Milk stocks at the end of May were 10.1% lower than a year earlier, representing a decline of around 81 million litres, indicating tighter market conditions.
Looking ahead, OCLA estimates that if the current recovery continues, per capita dairy consumption could reach 192.3 litres by the end of 2026, compared with 185.3 litres in 2025. Under a more conservative scenario, annual consumption is projected at around 180 litres per person, while the organisation’s baseline forecast stands at 188 litres.
Industry analysts believe demand trends during the second half of the year will determine the final consumption level. Sustaining export momentum while rebuilding domestic demand will remain crucial for Argentina’s dairy industry as processors seek to balance production growth, inventory levels, and market opportunities.
The latest figures underscore the increasingly important role of export markets in supporting Argentina’s dairy sector while reinforcing the country’s position as a significant supplier of dairy products to international markets.
