Gokul Dairy Raises Cow Milk Prices by ₹2 Per Litre Amid Rising Operational Costs

Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh, popularly known as Gokul Dairy, has announced a ₹2 per litre increase in the selling price of cow milk variants across major markets in Maharashtra.

The revised prices will come into effect from May 21, 2026, in Kolhapur, Pune, Mumbai, and cities across the Konkan region.

The decision was finalised during a meeting held at the dairy’s headquarters in Gokul Shirgaon under the supervision of the recently appointed administrative board.

Officials clarified that the price increase applies only to cow milk categories, including cow milk, toned milk, Shakti milk, and standard milk variants. Prices of buffalo milk products will remain unchanged.

Rising Costs Behind the Price Revision

According to Gokul Dairy officials, the latest hike was necessitated by increasing operational expenses, including rising fuel prices, transportation costs, packaging expenses, and higher raw material costs.

The move follows similar milk price hikes recently implemented by major dairy brands Amul and Mother Dairy across India.

Industry observers say the organised dairy sector is currently facing broad inflationary pressure due to increasing logistics costs, cattle feed prices, labour expenses, and supply-chain challenges.

Earlier Procurement Price Increase for Farmers

The latest consumer price revision also follows a procurement price increase announced by Gokul Dairy on February 21, 2026.

At that time, the cooperative increased purchase prices paid to farmers by ₹1 per litre for buffalo milk and ₹2 per litre for cow milk.

Officials said the cooperative initially absorbed the additional procurement burden internally without transferring the cost to consumers.

Sanjaykumar Sudrik stated that the current revision aims to maintain balance between fair farmer remuneration and affordable consumer pricing.

“This decision aims to ensure that milk producers receive fair remuneration while consumers continue to receive quality milk at reasonable prices. We have sought to strike a balance between the interests of farmers, consumers, and the association,” Sudrik said.

He added that future pricing decisions would depend on production trends and market conditions, while emphasising the cooperative’s focus on transparency and product quality.

Political Debate Over Milk Collection Decline

The price hike comes amid political discussions surrounding the recently appointed five-member administrative board managing Gokul Dairy.

Hasan Mushrif raised concerns that Gokul’s daily milk collection had reportedly declined by 50,000 to 60,000 litres since the new administrative body assumed charge.

Mushrif stated that the decline was an “alarming signal” and urged the administration to focus on strengthening milk procurement rather than engaging in political disputes.

However, dairy production experts and industry observers attributed the decline primarily to extreme summer heat and widespread fodder shortages affecting milk production across Maharashtra.

Several dairy-producing regions have experienced lower milk yields due to heat stress on cattle and reduced green fodder availability during the ongoing heatwave conditions.

Pressure Mounts Across India’s Dairy Sector

The latest revision by Gokul Dairy reflects a broader trend emerging across India’s organised dairy market, where cooperatives and private processors are increasingly revising milk prices to offset rising procurement and operational expenses.

Analysts believe additional regional dairy brands could also review pricing strategies in the coming months if inflationary pressures and input costs continue to remain elevated across the sector.
